Let me ask you…

I’m going to be a bit vague because I’m writing an article and want to gather some real-world opinions. This would include your own definition to my vague call for your feedback. If you can spare a moment I’d appreciate it if you humored me and comment about:
“Do you work in a limited environment?”
“If so, what are those limitations and do you feel they are, indeed, restrictive or can they be overcome?”
That’s it. I know – not a lot to go on but that’s the point of discovery. I would appreciate your feedback.

My first thought was yes.
I’m a teacher on one hand. I’m with the same 120 or so kids a day. I’m told what to teach, when to teach it and how I’m allowed to teach it.
Then I got thinking about how to overcome the limitations and I realized, no, I don’t work in a limited environment. Those kids may be the same kids every single day, but no day is ever the same. Heck, one class to the next isn’t even the same. Each child brings their own attitude, baggage, insight and questions which makes the whole process very enlightening. I tend to forget why I went to college through the summer!
On the other hand, I’m a graphic designer. I thought, no limits there. But then I realized, there are more limits (in different ways) on that, then there is to being a teacher.
I work out of my home. I work in a very small town, in a very small state. Though I see the unusual in most everything, I often have trouble finding exactly how to express that through design. And I often think, Man if I could just go to “x”, I’m sure I’d get inspiration. But I have the inspiration, just not always the ability to translate it. So, I suppose the limits are in my head and in my abilities. Which is always an obstacle.
So sorry. I wrote a mini novel for you.

For my regular paying job, yes, I feel very limited in that I am support staff and I do the work that is assigned to me. I can make suggestions and offer new ideas, but I am still limited to the final approval of the boss. I often feel like I’m wearing clothes that are too tight.
In my work on my internet t-shirt shop, I feel only limited by not enough time! I hope to one day be self employed, and while I know that brings its own set of challenges I expect to feel much more free because I will be the one in control. The decisions will be mine.
Hmmm…is this, then, an issue of a limited environment, or of self-determination?
